Workshop & Literary Event - Wednesday 14 December 2022

It’s almost Christmas!

Come along, join in the festivities, meet other women writers, catch up with your friends! You might even have some fun and learn something …

Workshop – Jan Cornall: Sensing the Writing

Time:  10:15 am to 12:00 pm
Place:
Dixson Room, State Library of NSW
Cost:  Members $35, non-members $45

As a student of meditation for many years, Jan has created a unique meditative method which she applies to the elements of writing craft. Using guided visualisation and sense memory, she is able to take writers deep into their creative source. Whether in the Moroccan desert, by the Mekong River in Laos, or in a classroom in Sydney, writers are able to tap into the present moment and  produce their best work.

We all know the power of evoking the senses in our writing, but how often do we remember to do it? Using meditative and visualisation techniques, Jan will show you how to tap deep into sense memory to bring your writing to life.

Jan Cornall of Writer’s Journey supports writers of all genres to realise their writing goals, through international writing workshops, journeys and mentoring services. Based in Sydney, Jan has been awarded a number of grants and fellowships for her writing and performance work and has written plays, musicals, screenplays, a novel, a collection of stories and poems, and three CDs of songs. With a Master of Arts in Cultural and Creative Practice, Jan has taught creative writing for two decades at writers’ centres, community colleges, universities (UTS, WSU) and writers’ festivals in Australia and the Asia Pacific. Since 2004, she has led creative retreats and journeys in Alice Springs, The Tarkine, Byron Bay, Glass House Mountains, Bali, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Fiji, Japan, Nepal, Tibet, Bhutan, Myanmar, Morocco, Paris, USA and more. Dedicated to nurturing the unique attributes of each writer, her writing workshops produce startling results. Numerous writers working with Jan have gone on to publish with major publishing houses.

A writer’s life …

Tracking the influence of poetry in my life from childhood, adolescence to womanhood, and its paramount place in my life now.

I’ll present my last three published picture books, that is:

  • No Never (Hachette) co-written with my daughter Lisa, Winner of the CBCA Award younger Reacders 2021

  • The Best Cat the Est Cat, a book commissioned by the State Library NSW in 2021 to showcase some of the precious archives held

  • We children and the Narrow Road to the Deep North 2022 (Interactive Press 2022), based on a trip to Japan to walk in the footsteps of the great haiku master Matsuo Basho.

Guest Speaker – Jan Cornall: 21 Reasons NOT to be a Writer — a humorous take on how to use reverse psychology to get words on the page!

Jan Cornall of Writer’s Journey supports writers of all genres to realise their writing goals through international writing workshops, journeys and mentoring services. Based in Sydney, Jan has been awarded a number of grants and fellowships for her writing and performance work and has written plays, musicals, screenplays, a novel, a collection of poems/stories and three CDs of songs. As a writing coach, she is well versed in all the excuses that writers use for NOT writing. Using several techniques (including reverse psychology), she helps writers overcome their avoidance habits.
