Workshop & Literary Event - Wednesday 12 March 2025

Workshop – Judith Beveridge: The Role of Imagery in Poetry

Time:  10:15 am to 12:00 pm
Place:
Dixson Room, State Library of NSW
Cost:  Members $40, non-members $55

The language of powerful writing is almost always picturesque. Rather than depending primarily upon abstract ideas, good writing depends mainly upon the creation of images in our minds which help us to see things new, or to feel them suggestively through the senses. This workshop will explore ways of strengthening and heightening the images we use in our writing, it will examine the value of showing through the image, rather than telling through statement.

Judith Beveridge has published eight volumes of poetry and has edited or co-edited a number of anthologies. She was poetry editor for Meanjin from 2005-2016. Her work has been studied in schools and universities and translated into many languages. Her volume Sun Music: New and Selected Poems (Giramondo, 2018) won the Prime Minister’s Poetry Prize in 2019. She taught poetry for 16 years at post-graduate level at The University of Sydney. Her latest book is Tintinnabulum (Giramondo, 2024).

A Secret Garden in Paris is the second in her adult novels set in Paris, written under the pen name of Sophie Beaumont, and published by Ultimo Press.

Guest Speaker – Magdalena Ball: The lost art of focus

We are all busy multitaskers, trying to do too much, juggling family, work, our own wellbeing, and creativity, while trying to resist the endless lure of the news cycle, entertainment pixels and advertising. Good writing is all about detail. This talk will be about the importance of focus, why it matters, how to fight distraction to focus more in order to enrich your work.

Magdalena Ball is a novelist, poet, reviewer, interviewer, Vice President of Flying Island, and managing editor of Compulsive Reader. Her work has appeared in an extensive list of journals and anthologies, and has won or shortlisted in many local and international awards, including the Melbourne Poets Union International Poetry Competition, the SCWC Poetry Award, the Liquid Amber Press poetry prize, the University of Canberra Vice-Chancellor’s international poetry prize, and the Woollahra Digital Literary Award, as well as shortlisting for a Red Room Poetry Fellowship. She is the author of several novels and poetry books, most recently, Bobish, a verse-memoir published by Puncher & Wattmann in 2023.
