Workshop – The Shape of a Story with Pippa Kay

Time:  10:15 am to 12:00 pm
Place:  Dixson Room, State Library of NSW
Cost:  Members $35, non-members $45

Whether you’re a ‘plotter’ or a ‘pantser’, writing fiction or non-fiction, you need some structure to the story you are telling. We’ll explore ways to pull your reader into the story on page one, build a bridge to span the middle and resolve the story at its end.

Pippa Kay is an award-winning short story writer and has won Society of Women Writers National Writing Awards three times. Her book of collected short stories, Keeping it in the Family, won the Fiction Award in 2018.

The Power of the Image with Judith Beveridge

The language of powerful writing is almost always picturesque. Rather than depending primarily upon abstract ideas, good writing depends mainly upon creating images in our minds. These iages help us to see things fresh and new, or to feel them suggestively through the senses. This workshop will explore ways of strengthening and heightening the images we use in our writing. It will examine the value of showing through the image rather than telling through statement.
Judith Beveridge has published seven volumes of poetry and has edited or co-edited a number of anthologies including Contemporary Australian Poetry (Puncher & Wattmann 2016). She was poetry editor for Meanjin from 2005 until 2016. Her work has been studied in schools and universities, and translated into many languages.  Her latest volume Sun Music: New and Selected Poems (Giramondo 2018) won the Prime Minister’s Poetry Prize in 2019. For a number of years she taught poetry at post-graduate level at The University of Sydney.

Note: The Women’s Club is close to St James and Town Hall railway stations, and located on the Elizabeth and Castlereagh Streets bus routes.
