Melissa Bruce: Exploring Voice, Style and Point of View
This workshop focuses on exploring a story’s narrative voice, examining aspects such as tone (the attitude of the narrator), rhythm (the flow and pace of the narrative), and perspective (the point of view from which the story is told). Habitual choices do not always present the most interesting narrative voice for each new work. No two snowflakes are the same. How is your fictional narrator’s voice distinctive? Who is telling your story and from which perspective? How do they sound? Are they alive, consistent, original? Is your non-fiction literary voice authentic and engaging?
This workshop encourages you to step beyond your comfort zone and discover unexpected possibilities in your storytelling. Through analysis, discussion and exercises, participants will observe how subtle shifts in point of view can dramatically alter the reader’s experience. Whether you’re revising an existing piece or starting fresh, this workshop aims to give you practical tools for deepening characterisation and enriching narrative texture.
Melissa holds an MA in Writing (UTS), a Diploma in Directing (NIDA) and a B.Ed. (Vic. College). Melissa has produced stage, radio and educational plays and published award-winning stories and poetry in various anthologies. Her debut novel, Picnic at Mount Disappointment, was awarded an ASA mentorship. It won the Woollahra Digital Literary Award for Fiction 2017 and was Highly Commended in the NSW Society of Women Writers 2018 Book Awards.
