Member Spotlight
Jude Chapman: The Waratah Club Mysteries: a marketing strategy
The Waratah Club Mysteries is set in an elegant club for ladies in the Sydney CBD. It is a warm and witty cosy crime story, with themes of loyalty, enduring friendships and the unexpected possibilities of later life.
Due to be released in August, the talk will outline a strategy to attract a target readership of women over 50 and build interest in a continuing series featuring the same characters and setting.
Jude Chapman lives in the Southern Highlands of NSW, having previously resided in Sydney’s Inner West, where her debut crime novel, The Body at Bones, is set. She enjoys writing stories that bring Australian settings to life while also featuring intriguing characters and plot twists. Before switching to fiction writing, Jude was a psychologist and author with a focus on leadership and team culture. She brings deep insights into human behaviour to the characters in her novels and short stories. Jude’s other passion is playing the piano and telling stories through music.
Guest Speaker

Catherine Cole: A French House: On the Love of Place
In her talk, Catherine will discuss the house and her creative choices when writing about it, especially the manner in which she used personal memoir and non-fiction to create a story that is personal and actively researched. She will share anecdotes and writing approaches about a small village and how she resisted the urge to just write a house renovation story and instead explored the wider lure of France.
Catherine Cole is a Professor of Creative Writing who has worked at UTS, RMIT and the University of Wollongong in Australia, and Liverpool John Moores University in the UK. She has been the recipient of writers’ residencies in Australia, France, Vietnam and the UK, and her work has been published in Australia and internationally. She has created 11 books including novels, short stories, memoir and non-fiction, academic texts and has edited anthologies, most of which have been nominated for literary awards. Her most recent book, A French House: on the love of place, examines her relationship with France and ways in which France attracts people to it through its culture, literature and film. The book is also a memoir which exposes her house in a French village in the Dordogne.
Un rêve. Une maison. Un village. Une vie en France.
In this richly-woven memoir of buying and restoring a village home in the Périgord, Catherine Cole explores the enduring allure of France, the dreams we project onto its verdant landscapes, and the literature, film and culture they continue to inspire. Cole is particularly interested in exploring the books that inspired her love of France, from Ludwig Bemelman’s Madeline series for children to contemporary French writers like Annie Ernaux. At the heart of the story is the house itself; its rooms, garden, and history revealing a quiet narrative of place, memory, and longing. For anyone who’s ever imagined a life elsewhere, this is a book about turning dreams into bricks and mortar. The book has been called ‘A love letter to a house, dream-seeded in books, haunted by place and past; a reverie memoir steeped in longing for a home away from home’.
