Member Spotlight

Elizabeth Lancaster: Bounty: Friendship, Illness and Writing About Real People

For years, Elizabeth had carefully managed life with multiple sclerosis, keeping its impact largely hidden. But when lifelong friend Emma persuades her to adopt an exuberant rescue dog, the decision sets off a chain of events neither of them could have foreseen. When Emma reveals her own devastating diagnosis, their roles are reversed. Bounty is about friendship, illness and the unexpected ways we find our way back to life.

Elizabeth will discuss her circuitous path from private writing to publication, examining the ethical dilemmas of writing about real people, the pitfalls of creating composite characters, and the unexpected gifts of memoir.

Elizabeth began her working life as an occupational therapist but changed direction after attending a writing course in New York City while living there with her husband and two children. After a shock diagnosis of multiple sclerosis, writing would provide her with a lifeline.

Her debut memoir, Marzipan and Magnolias won the inaugural Finch Memoir Prize. Her second book, Bounty: A Memoir of Friendship, MS and the Dog That Changed Everything, takes her story in an unexpected direction, forcing her to rethink her own assumptions about disability and belonging.

Anita Jacoby is a leading advocate for women in leadership and media. She is one of Australia’s most renowned television producers, along with being one of few women appointed Managing Director of the local operation for the British-based media conglomerate, ITV.

Prior to running ITV, Anita managed Zapruder’s other films alongside Andrew Denton, the company responsible for Enough Rope, The Gruen Transfer, Elders and Hungry Beast.

Her work has won numerous awards including Australian Film Institute awards, AACTA’s, a Logie, and the Asia Broadcasting Union Award. In 2019 she was recognised with a Member of the Order of Australia.

In 2022, she published a memoir, Secrets Beyond the Screen.

Anita Jacoby is one of Australia’s most distinguished television producers, media executives, board directors and authors.

Anita’s gift for storytelling has seen her explore the lives of presidents and royalty, showbiz legends and broadcasting giants, including Sir David Attenborough, Jane Fonda, Dame Helen Mirren and Bill Clinton … to name just a few.

Now she uncovers one of the most extraordinary stories of all, long hidden deep within her own family. Secrets Beyond the Screen is a very Australian story. One of tragedy and rebirth, resilience, and change. It is about love, grief, and the sacrifices parents make for their children. It’s a story that proves that children, no matter how old or wise they become, never truly know their parents.
