Legal Deposit
Legal deposit in Australia is a statutory requirement to provide copies of all published works to the National Library and relevant state or territory libraries to preserve the nation’s documentary heritage.
Legal deposit is a statutory obligation that ensures all material published in Australia is collected, preserved and made accessible for current and future generations (National Library of Australia). It applies to books, newspapers, magazines, maps, sheet music, government publications, community newsletters, and digital publications distributed to the public for free or for sale (National Library of Australia). The law is designed to capture a comprehensive record of Australian publishing, free from editorial or aesthetic judgment, reflecting the nation’s cultural and intellectual output (National edeposit).
